Keith looked out at the small group in the field just beyond the side porch of the Knoxes house. He could see Black Branch Ranch in the distance. Ira had gotten permission to take the day off to spend with Keith and his children, and Delfinia. Annabelle easily freed up her day and was out there at that very moment, chasing behind Charlie. She caught up to him and scooped him up, twirling him in the air above her head while he laughed hysterically.

Keith smiled wide.

“Annabelle is real good with kids,” he said. “I know they had a grand time when she sat with them while I was out of town those couple of days.”

“Yeah,” Ira responded from his seat nearby. His long legs were stretched out in front of him, and he had a beer clutched in one hand. “She still talks about that. I think that’s why she got me to recommend Delfinia. So she could have an excuse to see them all the time.”

“She wants some kids, don’t she?” Keith gave his friend a sidelong look.

“Yeah, she wants kids.”

“You’ve only been married a couple of months,” Keith reminded him. He was just teasing his friend. Ira snorted and took a swig from his beer.

“I don’t mind. I like your kids. And any offspring I have with that woman are bound to come out wonderful. Look at her.”

Keith chuckled, glad his friend was so in love with his wife. That was how he’d felt about Laura. A sweep of pain went through his body, but he ignored it. He wasn’t going to dwell anymore. There was nothing he could do to bring his beloved back. It was time to move forward.

Since the thought had entered his mind, Keith was reminded he wanted to talk to Ira about his feelings for Delfinia. He was hoping for some good advice.

“I was thinking about how you and Annabelle fell in love,” Keith said, unsure how to start the topic, so jumping in with a little white lie.

“You were?” Ira asked with great doubt in his voice. Keith looked over to meet his gaze.

“Well, sort of. I mean, I’m thinking more about… well, I’ve been thinking I might have to… to worry about… well, not worry but…”

“Good God, man, spit it out,” Ira interrupted with laughter in his voice.

Keith took a moment to gather his thoughts, his eyes on the ladies playing with his children in the field. He saw Delfinia throw her head back and laugh about something just before picking up Beth and placing her on her hip.

“Delfinia is a beautiful woman.” He paused before continuing, “I’m worried if I continue to force myself to let go of Laura, I might develop feelings for her. That could be a good thing, I know. She will be close to my children. But that’s not why I brought her here. That might not be what she wants or is expecting. And if I let myself think of her that way and she doesn’t return those feelings, I know it will put a strain on her working for me with my children.
